World Cup debutant Cape Verde produced one of the tournament’s first major surprises Monday, frustrating heavily favored Spain in a scoreless draw that felt like a victory for the 64th-ranked African nation.

Spain, among the pre-tournament favorites and the reigning European champion, controlled possession and generated the bulk of the scoring opportunities at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, Cape Verde’s disciplined defense and standout goalkeeping performance from veteran captain Vozinha denied Luis de la Fuente’s side throughout the Group H opener. Spain manager De la Fuente left teenage star Lamine Yamal on the bench to start, introducing him later as his side searched unsuccessfully for a breakthrough.

Led by captain Ryan Mendes and coach Bubista, Cape Verde absorbed wave after wave of pressure while remaining organized and threatening occasionally on the counterattack. Spain’s midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri and Fabián Ruiz dictated play, but clear chances went unfinished as Ferran Torres and substitute Yamal were unable to break the deadlock.

The result marked a landmark moment for Cape Verde, which entered the tournament as one of the lowest-ranked teams in the field and made its World Cup debut against a squad expected to challenge for the title. Fans from the island nation celebrated a point that could prove valuable in a group that also includes Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Spain remains in position to advance but faces increased pressure ahead of its next match against Saudi Arabia on Monday, June 22, before concluding their group stage campaign against Uruguay. Meanwhile, Cape Verde squad will will play against Uruguay as they pursue an unlikely path into the knockout rounds.
